Neo’s reaction to his surprise party was everything Billy hoped for, and more. He felt like all the gifts were his. It had been one of the best nights Billy had in a long time, even though his phone wouldn’t stop buzzing. Unfortunately, he had known it would be that way. Some things were unavoidable.

With dinner and cake consumed, Billy poured Neo his third glass of champagne and cuddled with him beneath a thick blanket on the couch. They hadn’t sat and just talked like this in forever. He didn’t want to be anywhere else. “I know what Omri has been doing, but what about you? Have you been with him every step of the way or do you also have a secret life I don’t know about?” Billy’s phone buzzed again with several incoming messages. He read through them and responded to each one before focusing on Neo again. “Sorry about all the interruptions tonight. The draft starts tomorrow. Things are pretty fucking crazy for me right now.”

Neo looked confused. “I don’t know what that is.”

Billy shook his head. He didn’t know where to start explaining something so complicated. “It’s a huge day for the team every year. We pick up new players.”

Neo’s expression cleared. “Oh. Speaking of football, though. How did you end up running your family’s team, anyhow? You had less than zero interest in that team back in high school, as I recall. Now it’s your whole life. How did that happen?”

For a moment, Billy considered not answering. Unfortunately, Neo stared at him and waited. Billy didn’t see a way around explaining himself. “Honestly, I took over the team to hurt my dad.”

Some of the light left Neo’s eyes.

Neo set his glass aside, as if he might leave. “Oh.” He looked away, as if he searched for his shoes. “I thought Will had no more interest in running the team than you.” He sounded distracted. Billy knew he had to act fast or Neo was out of there. He grabbed Neo’s foot and started massaging. Neo settled back into the pillows and focused on Billy.

The phone buzzed next to Billy. He ignored it. “Dad didn’t have any real interest in running the team, but I knew he would have done so to make his dad proud. The Apollos were Grandad’s entire world. That team was all he cared about when he was alive. So, of course, Dad always resented it. But I know he only felt that way because he loved his dad and he wanted more of him. If Grandad would have been willing to teach him the ropes, Dad would’ve willingly taken over handling the team. I mean, it’s his now. He knew it would be one day.”

Billy hated admitting the worst of himself. But he wanted to spend the rest of his life with Neo, so Neo needed to hear that Billy had been a spoiled child. “So when I left for college, instead of studying music like I planned, I went into sports management.
